Taken on a cloudy, grey day, with tri-x 400 film in my Hasselblad 500 cm. Scanned in with an epson flatbed scanner.

I finally got a Hasselblad. I wanted one since high school, however, with the advent of digital photography, the desire went away. Being back in the darkroom, though, has re-interested me in the traditional methods of photography, and with that, the desire for a top-notch camera.

This was off the first roll of photos I took with the camera. I've never used a medium format camera before. I read a ton of information on message boards, web sites, and watched stuff on youtube to learn how to do stuff like load film, use the lens for functions like aperature and shutter speed, use a light meter, and so forth. It's very much unlike a 35mm camera.

Once all the equipment was ready to go, there is then the change of looking through the top of a camera, into a square, and seeing the image flipped. It takes longer to compose the image, move your body to get the framing correct, and then moving the whole camera around to determine the composition. You also only have 12 shots per roll of film, so there is a greatly increased desire to really choose one good shot to take, instead of snapping off 30 and hoping one is right.

The result is a much slower picture-taking process. Oddly enough, I love it! I think having to be so careful and considerate of everything I'm doing is really helping me form tighter photographs that pack more meaning into each frame. I'm carefully consider f-stops and shutterspeeds, whereas on digital, I generally only pick one to focus on and let my camera figure out the other.

I'm also starting to explore with using various chemicals in the darkroom to help me get finer photographs. This adds another element of personal control into the photograph. Basically, much more of ME is in each picture.

And, the results are great. I haven't done a really great side by side comparison yet, but the Hasselblad might be delivering me sharper, crisper results than my new Canon 5d Mark ii. Or at least the lens might be. There are so many variables it's hard to know for sure, but I do think my Hasselblad can stand on its' own against some of the more powerful modern cameras.

So, I'm very pleased with this photo. I love the shades of grey I'm getting, and the crispness of everything, even though I intentionally blurred the fence a bit. I love the square composition - it seems like everything has a bit more room to breathe, but is also more focused and eye-directing. The building really was not so powerful in reality, but the crispness and square that the Hasselblad gave me seems to have focused the most important elements into a photo I really feel is outstanding.

I know it's almost heretical to say, but I'm enjoying the Hasselblad more than my Canon 5d mk ii right now. I think both will balance out, however, and give me a wide range of versatility that I love as an artist.

While We Wait: Living the Questions of Advent

Sometimes we struggle to believe we'll experience anything new as Advent comes around. What could we possibly learn that we haven't seen or heard before? If you're looking for an Advent study of a different slant, While We Wait: Living the Questions of Advent offers new ways of connecting the story with your own questions of faith and approaches an all-too-familiar narrative from perspectives we may have missed. You'll read about biblical figures mentioned in passing in the ""original"" Advent. Somewhat surprisingly, Tamar, Ruth, Mary, Zechariah, Elizabeth, and the Magi ask questions that resonate with contemporary Christians. ""I hope While We Wait will help people who don't want to gloss over their questions about the Christmas story,"" writes Redding. ""This book examines Advent as a journey in which God seeks us at many levels of our understanding and spiritual willingness. It allows for real-life struggles and questions as a part of Advent's spiritual exploration.""Designed as a complete Advent study, this book offers readers or groups * unique perspectives on the events of Christmas * complete plans for small-group sessions * a fifth session for the week of Epiphany * daily scripture reading and reflection questions * an introduction to the spiritual discipline of breath prayer
What are the questions you bring to God this season?

Best Digital Camera Under

    digital camera
  • A digital camera (also digicam or camera for short) is a camera that takes video or still photographs, or both, digitally by recording images via an electronic image sensor.

  • A camera that records and stores digital images

  • a camera that encodes an image digitally and store it for later reproduction

  • Usually captures images with the help of a CCD chip. The image data received is then saved to special memory cards or other storage media. (SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card,  Compact Flash,  Memory Stick,  SD Card,  MMC Card)

Digital.

Digital.

It was raining quite heavily on my way to work. I am fortunate, then, that I spend the majority of my commute either under rooves or on buses. I've been waiting for an opportunity to shoot people with umbrellas, and today just happened to be that day.

I pushed this photograph on purpose, the noise and under-exposure were deliberate.

-

Perhaps the greatest thing about shooting with a digital SLR is the sheer flexibility of the image, not only in terms of post-production simplicity, but also when it comes to portability, flexibility and the creative freedom for which shooting RAW allows. Shooting with film is wonderful for many reasons, but digital will always be my firm favourite.

I find it strange, then, that so many fashionable young people have reverted back to lomo-esque film photography to get their kicks. One of the foundations of being a hipster is that age-old line "you probably haven't heard of them". Being on the bleeding edge of cool, being an early adopter of new trends and being innovative is, to my mind, what being a hipster is all about. So why film?

Anyone who bothers to mess around with Lightroom and a RAW file for a few hours will be well aware of the destructive potential of post-production, so why aren't these hipsters embracing the technology around them and pushing the limits of their cameras and files? Why aren't they all shooting with DSLRs instead? Surely that's where the innovation lies. As technology advances and the limits and capabilities of constructive alteration are ever-increased, so too are the limits and capabilities of destructive alteration.

I find it strange that people so concerned with trendsetting l would revert back to an outdated, imperfect and restrictive medium rather than embrace the high technology around them. I can understand that these lomo style shots are reasonably charming (I've even looked into buying an LC-A), but it doesn't really seem to fit in with the rest of their credo.

Maybe I just don't get it. I find hipsters confusing at the best of times, so perhaps I'm not made of the right stuff. Not that that's a bad thing as most hipster photographs are pretty terrible. You need only look at Tumblr to discover that.

P.S - I really hope none of you are shaking your head and thinking "hypocrite".
P.P.S - This is one of my favourite photographs. /blowsowntrumpet

My Mid-range Lenses

My Mid-range Lenses

Each of theses lenses has a focal length under 300mm and with a 2X teleconverter will be in excess of 300mm. The five in the front row are the lenses I am currently using. The four in the back row I used in the past before purchasing better alternatives.

Front row left to right: 1. Tamron Adaptall-2 75-250mm f3.8-4.5 model 104A CF Tele Macro. 2. Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 70-210mm f3.5 model 19AH CF Macro. 3. Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 70-210mm f3.5-4 model 52A CF Tele Macro. 4. Pre-AI Nikkor 200mm f4. 5. Tamron Adaptall-2 200mm f3.5 model 04B Close Focus. Back row left to right: 1. Tamron Adaptall-2 80-210mm f3.8-4 model 103A CF Tele Macro. 2. N/AI Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 Macro Focusing Auto Zoom (manual focus). 3. Tamron Adaptall-2 70-210mm f3.8-4 model 46A. 4. Tamron Adaptall-2 70-210mm f4-5.6 model 58A.

I used the Vivitar Series 1 lens regularly with my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) body from July 2008 into May 2009. I was able to get great results with a Vivitar 2X teleconverter in macro mode up to 0.9X (just under 1:1), but much less than ideal performance in telephoto mode.

I find the model 19AH to be the best of the 70-210mm zooms and when I need a little more macro magnification, but do not want to use my macro lens, I can use the model 52A with a 01f teleconverter for a 140-420mm f7.6-8 for telephoto use and up to 1:1 for macro use and it is a continuous focus lens from infinity to macro. I have only used this combination a few times but expect to use it regularly next summer. This combination works well on the Pentax K20D body.

I use the model 104A often with the K20D body alone as a 75-250mm lens or with the 01f teleconverter as a 150-500mm lens. I find this lens to work well for bird imaging and it was relatively cheap at $19 US.

This collection was imaged on the sunroom table in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA, with a Sony DSC-H5B point and shoot digital camera.

My Sony VX2000 - Want it?

I've got this sony VX2000... bought it about 2 years ago with the intention to add digital video to our photography services. Well,... as it would happen, we never really pursued it. So here it sits in all it's glory, doing absolutely nothing for me.

It probably has 25-30 hours on it. Mostly small gigs that we did take on and a few family vids. Outside of that, it's in amazing shape and for sale for $1000.

If anyone is interested, by all means, contact me at paul@floridasunphotography.com . It's going up on Ebay tonight. You'll recognize it by this pic.

BTW, this is a Strobist shot, taken with 2 off camera flashes triggered wirelessly. Here are the specs
